About Benny's Dog Resort
Benny de la Vega, a Southern Methodist University graduate, opened Benny's Dog Resort (previously Pet Stay & Play) in 2002. Benny has two dogs, Jackson and Baxter, who help him run the daycare by greeting and making the new dogs feel welcome. Benny is a member of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). In addition, Benny's Dog Resort has been a Better Business Bureau Accredited Business since 2004 and currently has an A+ rating. Locally, Benny's Dog Resort received the 2009 Best of WFAA-List for Best Boarding facility.
Benny's Dog Resort offers daycare and boarding, as well as baths and taxi services for your dog. Day care rates begin at $15 per dog per day, and discounts are available when you pre-purchase a 5-day or 10-day pass. Additionally, with a 20-day pass, your dog gets a free bath. Boarding rates begin at $30 per night for a standard suite and $40 for a VIP suite. Daycare is included for all dogs boarding with Benny's Dog Resort. Each suite includes elevated bedding, comfortable sleeping temperature, and soothing music. The VIP suites are larger (6'x4' or 6'x8') and guests get more private meal times and a quieter hotel environment. For both standard and VIP suites, additional guests may share a space for $15 extra per dog. Baths start at $25 for small dogs and go up to $55 for large dogs. Pet taxi services are available within 5-10 miles of Benny's for $25 per trip. (Benny's requests that you call 24-48 hours in advance to reserve this service.)
What to expect
For first time dog hotel guests, Benny's Dog Resort offers the following suggestions and information:
- Ask questions. Get to know the staff and their approach to taking care of your dogs.
- Do not feed your dog for at least four hours prior to boarding.
- Be happy - your dog will sense your positive energy, which will reduce the stress of being separated from you.
- Bring your dog's own food, bedding, and toys. These items will help your dog be comfortable in a new environment.
- Understand that dogs can play rough at times and that injuries may result from normal activity. However, Benny and his staff will do everything they can to ensure that rough play is diffused before it becomes an issue.
- Any dog or owner that exhibits bad behavior, aggression, excessive barking, destroying property, or any harmful activity will be denied as a client of Benny's Dog Resort.
Other information
During the day, the dogs are cycled into the large outdoor play area, where they can run, swim or lay in one of the swimming pools, climb on the new pirate ship, or simply lounge in the sun. For those that want a quieter place to nap or more shade, a large indoor area is accessible at all times. Be advised that Benny's does not separate dogs by size or temperament. Most of the dogs that board and attend day care are larger dogs, so a small timid dog may not be very comfortable around the twenty or more large dogs that are rough-housing with each other. However, Benny's does a full evaluation during a mandatory "meet and greet" where potential clients bring their dogs to meet Benny and determine if the day care is a good fit for the dog. Only dogs that are able to get along with other dogs are allowed to board at Benny's. In addition, a staff member is usually present with the dogs while they are playing and can monitor the pack for any signs that playtime is getting too aggressive.
