Dog trainers will tell you, "You get what you pet." If your dog is begging for food or displaying bad behavior, resist the urge to pet him as a substitute for table scraps or in an effort to calm him. Petting is a positive reinforcement and your dog will continue the unwanted behavior. A better option is to walk away or give a command like "sit" or "off" that will cause your pet to stop and re-focus.
