This week, Dr. Manley addresses a reader's concern about over-walking her dogs.
This week's question:
Dr. Manley,
I have a Pomerian (1-year-old) and a Shih Tzu (2-years-old). They love their
walks and we go 6 days a week.
In the heat of the summer we go about a mile before they get too hot. With
the recent cooler weather we can easily go 1.5 miles. Given their size is
there a distance that would be unhealthy for them?
Thanks,
--Julia
Dr. Manley's Reply:
Hi Julia,
Every pet is different. It really depends on how well conditioned your pet
is, and the heat and humidity that day. Avoid walking too far from home; if your pet becomes
overheated it will only worsen during a long walk home.
It is wise to pay close attention
to your pet during walks. If your pet starts to pant excessively, vomits,
if her gums turn dark red, or if she seems disoriented she may be suffering
from heat stroke. If you think your pet is suffering from heat stroke, cool her down by wetting her coat. Keep
her calm and out of direct sunlight. See your vet as soon as possible. A
heat stroke episode can damage organ systems.
Thanks for the question....Dr. Manley"

Dogs can get sunburned too, so be sure to apply sunscreen when your dog will be out in the sun for extended periods of time. Apply sunscreen to the tips of his ears, bridge of his nose, groin area, inside of the legs and the underbelly. Be sure to use a sunscreen that does NOT contain PABA or Zinc Ozide (which is harmful to dogs if ingested) or a brand made specifically for dogs. |
