This week's Ask the Vet question:
How can I tell if my dog is underweight?

He is an 8-pound Chihuahua mix, and is 15 months old. I feed him a premium dog food and he eats the recommended dosages every day. He also gets treats like carrots and melon, and moist food rolls. He doesn't seem hungry but he just looks really skinny. His rib cage is very deep and I can feel his ribs when I pick him up. I feel like I should probably feed him more fattening treats or something, so he can have a little meat on his bones. Should I be concerned?

Dr. Manley's Reply:

A dog's weight and frame size can vary within each breed. The best way to determine if your pet's body condition is ideal is to feel the rib cage. There should be a thin layer of fat over the ribs. You should be able to feel the ripple. Your should not be able to see the ribs or the vertebrate. Now look down over your pet's back. He should taper in behind the rib cage. Remember, it is healthier to be a little on the lean side than on the overweight side. Obesity is the most common health problem we see. Obesity will result in orthopedic problems, diabetes, liver disease, and heart conditions.

Thanks for the question....Dr. Manley"

Dogs can get sunburned too, so be sure to apply sunscreen when your dog will be out in the sun for extended periods of time. Apply sunscreen to the tips of his ears, bridge of his nose, groin area, inside of the legs and the underbelly. Be sure to use a sunscreen that does NOT contain PABA or Zinc Ozide (which is harmful to dogs if ingested) or a brand made specifically for dogs.
